Fit Tip #12

Healthy Holidays - December 2014

cornucopia of food

The holiday season provides many opportunities to enjoy seasonal foods and drinks (like eggnog for example). So while it can be difficult to maintain a diet and exercise program through the holidays, it can be done! It's about being consistent and maintaining balance. Here are a few tips to help you stay consistent during the holidays:

  • Incorporate more movement into your day. Take a walk with a friend during your lunch break, ride a bike to work, or use the gym.
  • Make healthy food choices whenever possible. I recommend following the "90/10 rule" which means 90% of your diet is highly nutritious and 10% of your diet can be "junk". When I say "junk" I mean things that either aren't nutritious (like donuts for example), or just having too much of something good (like extra helpings of turkey and sweet potatoes).
  • Track your activity and diet. Seeing what you're actually doing has been proven to help people make better diet and exercise choices.

With the help of these tips, you can maintain a consistent and healthy lifestyle and also enjoy some of the treats of the holiday season.
