Proper nutrition is established on a few simple principles. Knowing the ABCs of nutrition can help you remember these principles, and help you develop an optimal diet.
- A is for Adequate: A healthy diet should provide enough of all nutrients. Reference Daily Intake and other guidelines outline quantities needed for proper health.
- B is for Balanced: Get the right amount of all nutrients in proportion to one another.
- C is for Calorie Control: Eat the appropriate amount of calories to maintain health and proper body weight and composition.
Here are two more foundational letters for proper nutrition.
- M is for Moderation: Watch portion sizes, and allow "junk food" sparingly.
- V is for Variety: Eat foods from all food groups, a rainbow of colors, and remember to try new foods.
