There are many small muscles throughout the body that are often overlooked and undertrained. Ever heard of the serratus anterior? The tensor fasciae latae? The piriformis? Okay, you get the point. Although many of us don't appreciate it, these little muscles have very important roles in our bodies. They stabilize our joints, support larger muscles, and are essential to properly moving our bodies. Poor body movement or "mechanics" can lead to decreased mobility, pain and injury. By training the small, stabilizing muscles we not only reduce the likelihood of developing joint pain and problems, we actually develop strength and improve the function of the larger muscles of the body too. This translates to pain free movement during exercise and in everyday life. So remember, don't overlook the little guys!
