What is the importance of the number 3,500? It is the number of calories in one pound. Simply put that means that to lose one pound you must burn or not consume 3,500 calories. On the other hand, eating an extra 3,500 calories will add a pound. Knowing these facts can help with goal setting. For example, if you exercise to burn an extra 1,000 calories per week you'll lose a pound every 3 1/2 weeks.
